Power chair shopping

Maya got to try out a few powerchairs at Texas Childrens today. She is doing so well in her manual chair, but her diagnosis does come with the need to get power. We managed to put it off until she was a little older and looking back I am glad she did. She did learn how to push the joystick back and forth but the real fun was clearly in all the buttons. Unfortunately none of which made her move. But she sounded the "horn" and the backup warning beeps. At one point she even made her own "beep beep beep" sound as she was backing up the chair. Naturally there was some wall bumping and several of us fast on our feet before having a 250 lb power chair go across our toes! I was not very smart and forgot to bring my camera so no pics but they are planning on coming out to the house in a couple of weeks to demo the two we like. I plan on videotaping that one.

The rest of the visit was for measuring Maya for her new stander. We decided to get the same one she has only bigger. She went through quite a growth spurt over Christmas! And finally we tried out a new bath chair. For the other special needs moms that are reading, there are some bath chairs that need to be relabeled as shower chairs. The first one we got sits up so high that Maya wasn't able to sit and play in the bathtub like she should be doing at this age. I want nothing more than to at least let her enjoy her bathtime! So we found this wrap around contraption that allows her to sit directly on the floor. We can use it in the pool too! We got a nice surprise when the sales rep from Rehab offered to let us keep the demo they brought. How awesome! That just saved me another $400. All in all a great visit to the big hospital.
